When the gun had gone off, Coop felt his heart stop for a moment, then he saw Ashlee fall to the ground. He didn't stop to think that Joe could shoot him too, he just ran to her. In the back of his mind he heard a scuffle behind him, but he didn't turn to look, he just had to get to Ashlee.
She was laying on the ground, but she wasn't awake. Her left side was bloody and there was blood in her blond hair. Coop couldn't tell how bad it was, but the thought of her dying was running through his head no matter how hard he tried to push it away. He grabbed his cell phone and dialed 911. Ashlee let out a groan but her eyes didn't open, still the fact that she had groaned made Coop breathe just a bit easier.
"911, what's your emergency?"
"My girlfriend's been shot... please hurry we're in Slade Park near the creek..." Coop was trying to focus on the conversation, but was having a hard time of it.
"Paramedics are on the way... stay on the line until you see them." Coop tucked the phone between his shoulder and ear and touched Ashlee's face. She was looking a bit pale and her skin was clammy. "Hang on, Ash."
Coop heard the sirens and the paramedics showed up moments later, although to him it felt like hours. Hours of the woman he loved lying there bleeding and there was nothing he could do to help. The paramedics rushed over to them. They began working on Ashlee immediately.
"Is she going to be okay?" Coop's words felt thick in his throat as if he would choke on them. The paramedics didn't answer, but he felt a hand on his shoulder. Frank was standing next to him.
"How's she doing?" He asked.
"Frank, she got shot! How do you think she's doing?" Coop felt bad for biting Frank's head off, but his panic was overwhelming him. He watched them move Ashlee in to the ambulance in silence. Once they shut the doors Frank turned to him.
"What was she even doing here, Coop? Did you tell her where we were going?" Coop shook his head at his brother. Ashlee must have followed him here and he should have known she would do something like that. She definitely had not wanted him to go. Coop was about to head to the hospital when he noticed Joe walking by in handcuffs with two uniformed police officers. Suddenly all he felt was blinding rage toward the man who had shot Ashlee.
He ran over to Joe and decked him. The two uniformed police started pushing him away and Frank ran up behind him. "Coop, what the hell are you thinking?" Frank had to physically haul him off of Joe.
"What am I thinking? He shot Ashlee!" Coop shouted as his brother cradling his fist in his other hand.
Frank pulled him away from the officers helping up Joe and spoke quietly to him. "Listen to me, little brother, you need to calm down and get to the hospital. You need to be there for Ashlee." When his brother mentioned the hospital some of Coop's rage subsided. He nodded and walked to his car. He needed to be with Ashlee right now. He just hoped she was okay.

Ashlee opened her eyes and blinked. Why was it so bright? She didn't know exactly where she was, but her head hurt... and her right side didn't feel so great either. She tried to move but all her limbs felt heavy. Before she could freak out about it, Coop leaned over her and took her hand.
"I'm so happy to see you." His voice was soft. His other hand cupped her face gently.
"What... what happened?"
"You got shot." Coop's thumb was caressing her cheek lightly.
"What? I got shot?"
"Shh, it's okay. You're going to be fine. The doctor said you were lucky. The bullet grazed you on your right side, you lost some blood, but you are okay."
"Why does my head hurt?" Ashlee was trying to focus on his words but her head felt fuzzy.
"When you fell you hit your head on a rock, you needed three stitches."
"Oh... Coop? Did they find the guy that sold Blake the gun?" She remembered them talking to Joe, he said he knew the guy that sold the gun to Blake. If they could find him, then she wouldn't have to go to jail.
Coop placed a kiss on her forehead. "I don't want you to worry about that right now, okay? Everything is going to be fine. Get some sleep." Her eyes started to drift closed at his words. Sleep was good.
******************************
Coop watched Ashlee drift back to sleep, courtesy of the pain killers the doctors had given her. He hated lying to her, but he wanted her to focus on getting better and not worry about what was going on with the Blake situation.
She had been incredibly lucky that Joe had been so startled his aim had been off. The bullet had grazed her side, causing a bloody but not lethal wound. The doctors had been more concerned about her head, which had hit a rock when she'd fallen, they wanted to keep an eye on her for a couple of days to make sure she didn't have any problems. Coop had breathed a sigh of relief. Until he'd received the message from Frank telling him that since Joe had been arrested, they had no way to get the message to Johnny. He had officers out looking for him, but if they couldn't find him, Ashlee was looking at possible jail time.
Coop rolled his neck trying to get rid of some of the tension. If Frank didn't find this Johnny guy, Coop would hunt him down himself. He would not lose Ashlee again.
With that thought in his head, Coop settled back in to the chair by Ashlee's bed and fell asleep.
