“It's a girl!” Coop insisted. He was sprawled across the couch in his apartment, with Ashlee leaning against him. His hand stroked her stomach idly.
“Coop, it's a boy... I know it is.” Ashlee replied with a knowing smile.
“How would you know?” Coop asked an eyebrow raised.
“Mothers intuition.” She replied firmly. Coop gave her a look and she started laughing. “Okay, I don't know how I know, but it feels like a boy.”
Coop didn't respond he just kissed her. He didn't want to argue with her, but his fathers intuition was telling him it was a girl. They had been having this argument for weeks now and thankfully they were going to find out that afternoon which one of them was right.
Ashlee had always been a bundle of energy, but since she'd found out she was pregnant she was even more so. Coop had trouble keeping up with her most of the time. He thought women were supposed to be tired all the time when they were pregnant, but Ashlee seemed to be the opposite. That made quiet moments like this one all the more special to him.
Her dizzy spells had pretty much disappeared and Ashlee had been taken off bed rest after only a week. Ever since then, Ashlee had been in a constant state of motion. She and Daisy had gone shopping for baby clothes together on more than one occasion and Coop couldn't help thinking that no matter what gender the baby was, he or she was going to spend most of his or her time in yellow.
Coop had taken her out house-hunting several times as well. Ashlee was still hesitant to have him spending so much on her and the baby, Coop kept reminding her that he was a best-selling author now. He had plenty of money, but since Ashlee had missed so much when she was in the coma, she still forgot sometimes.
“You want to stop by Company and get something to eat?” He asked.
“That sounds great, just promise me you won't fight with my mom. She's got today off and I'm sure she'll be staying close to your dad.”
Coop rolled his eyes. “I've apologized to her about what I said at the hospital... about ten times.” He added.
“I know that.” Ashlee said with a smile. “But, Doris tends to hold a grudge. Don't worry, she'll get over it soon... especially with Buzz working on her.” She added with a grin.
“Ashlee, what I said to her was true...” He began.
“I know. And I love you for always defending me, but she's trying to do better. Yes, she wasn't the best mom, she made mistakes, but she's trying and I don't think we can ask for more than that. Especially from Doris.” Ashlee added with a wink. She stood up, grabbing his hand and pulling him up too. “Come on, I'm hungry. I'm eating for two, you know?” She gave him a playful smile and headed for the door.
They walked in to Company and were immediately greeted by his dad and Doris. Buzz was on one side of the bar, leaning toward Doris, who was perched on a stool.
“Ashlee! How are you feeling today?” Doris rushed over to her daughter.
“I'm fine, mother.” She replied, but Doris cut her off with more questions.
Coop turned to his dad. “Can we get a couple of burgers, pop?”
“Sure thing.” He said motioning over one of the servers. “So, you are finding out today, right?”
“Yes.” Coop couldn't hide his excitement. “I know it's a girl.” He added.
“Coop Cooper, I've told you a million times that it's a boy!” Ashlee said grabbing on to his arm with both of hers. He grinned at her. He hadn't realized she was listening.
“And I've told you a million times, it's a girl!” He said placing a playful kiss on the tip of her nose. She let out a laugh.
Doris rolled her eyes. “I can't believe you two are still arguing about this. For heaven's sake, you'll know soon enough.”
“Calm down, mom. He's just teasing, he knows I'm right.” Ashlee said, sneaking a glance at Coop's incredulous face.
Coop glanced down at her sly smile. “I never said that...” before he could finish the sentence Ashlee had pulled his lips down to hers. The kiss she gave him wasn't a quick peck, it was slow and sweet and when she pulled away, Doris had turned away, but Buzz was watching them with a silly grin on his face.
“Now, lets eat. I don't want to be late for our appointment.” She gave him a smug smirk and pulled him over to a table.
After lunch, which was filled with arguing and teasing they headed to their appointment. Coop felt like a little kid on Christmas morning, he felt like he had been waiting forever to find out if he was going to have a son or a daughter. Even though he and Ashlee had been arguing over it, he honestly would be thrilled no matter what.
Doctor Sinclair walked in with a smile. “How are the expectant parents?” She asked.
“We are having a bit of a disagreement about if the baby is a boy or a girl.” Ashlee responded.
Coop was standing next to the bed Ashlee was sitting on, her hand in his. “We were hoping you could help us with that.” He added.
The doctor laughed. “Hopefully I'll be able to tell you today. Then no more arguing for the rest of the pregnancy... you two think you can handle that?” She asked pointing a finger at them.
Coop looked at Ashlee. They shared a doubtful look and the doctor started laughing again. “Well, at least you won't have to argue about this anymore.”
She squirted some gel on to Ashlee's stomach and began the ultrasound. “So, what do you think the baby is, mom?” The doctor asked Ashlee, her gaze never leaving the screen. Coop couldn't tell what anything was, it just looked like blobs to him.
“It's definitely a boy.” Ashlee replied, her eyes studying the screen as well. Coop wondered if she could make better sense of it than he could.
“So, you think it's a girl, dad?” The doctor asked.
“Yes, it's got to be a girl.” He added with a smile. The doctor kept watching the screen, moving her hand around Ashlee's stomach. Her brows knitted together before smoothing out. “What is it?” Coop asked in concern.
The doctor turned to them. Her frown and turned in to a smile. “I think I'll be able to settle your argument.”
“Tell him I'm right.” Ashlee said with a grin.
“Actually... you are both right.”
“What?” Coop and Ashlee said the word in unison.
“You are having twins and from what I can see here, you're both right.”
“T...twins?” Ashlee asked. Her gaze flew to Coop's. When he met her eyes he couldn't help the smile that spilled across his face. Two babies. It was a shock, but everything had been recently and at least this was a happy shock. He leaned down and wrapped his arms around Ashlee as best he could. His forehead touching hers.
“I love you.” He said softly, giving her a soft kiss. “And I was right.” He added when he pulled away.
She gave him a playful smack. “Well, so was I!” Ashlee's eyes sparkled up at him and he kissed her again before they finally directed their attention back to the doctor. She was smiling as well, as she started pointing different things out to them. Coop watched but he was too excited to focus, he was going to have two babies... that's all he needed to know.
