Feedback makes me smile...
The room was dark, but he knew it was Ashlee. She was at the top of the bed, leaning against the head board. Her arms were wrapped around her knees, tears were falling down her face. He ran over to the bed and wrapped his arms around her.
"Ashlee, what happened? What's wrong? Are you okay?" The questions rushed out of him at a frantic pace. When her gaze met his there was a tortured look in her eyes.
"Coop... I... I..." She was crying so hard she couldn't seem to get any words out. Coop pulled her closer placing a kiss on the top of her head. He wanted to comfort her, but he didn't even know what was wrong.
"Ash, what is it? Let me turn on the light..." He reached around her to turn on the light on the nightstand and her hand grabbed his wrist.
"No!" Her voice seemed loud in the stillness of the room. Her hand on his wrist was wet.
"Ashlee, what you you got all over you? Just let me hit the light..." He flipped the switch before she could protest further and glanced down at her hand. "Is this blood? Are you hurt?" Coop quickly pushed her away from him so he could look her over.
"Coop... I'm okay." Ashlee managed to get out.
"You are NOT okay. Where did this blood come from?" He asked still looking her over searching for an injury.
"Blake." The word came out on a whisper. "She was here... Coop... she wanted to kill me... she..." She didn't finish but she pointed to the other side of the bed. Coop looked down at the floor and let out a gasp. Blake was laying there in a pool of blood.
"Oh, God, Ash... we have to call 911."
"Coop," Ashlee grabbed his arm. "She tried to shoot me... I didn't know what to do..."
"Okay." He said pulling her back in to his arms for a moment. "It's going to be okay. I'm going to see if she's breathing. Do you know where your cell phone is?" Ashlee took a deep breath and he saw her trying to mentally pull herself together. She nodded and reached for her purse. "Call Frank."
He knelt on the floor next to Blake. Coop didn't have to be a doctor to realize she was dead. He checked for a pulse anyway, but it was too late. Coop still wasn't sure exactly what had happened but one thing he knew for sure was that Blake shouldn't have been in his room and Ashlee was terrified. He heard her talking to Frank on the phone but her words were tripping over one another. He climbed back on the bed and sat next to Ashlee putting an arm around her and grabbing the phone from her.
"Frank, we need you to get over to my place right now."
"Coop? What is going on? Ashlee said something about a gun..."
"Frank, we'll explain once you get here... and can you bring an ambulance too?" Before Frank could answer he ended the call and wrapped his arms around Ashlee. She wasn't cry anymore, but she was shaking.
"I'm sorry, Coop... " Her words were murmured in to his shirt. Coop squeezed her tighter.
"Don't be sorry, Ashlee. This wasn't your fault." He knew with certainty that this had been Blake's fault. All those calls she'd made to him and when she'd shown up where he was, but he never believed that she would do something like this.
When Frank got there he and Ashlee were still sitting on the bed and Coop still had his arms around her. "Coop, what happened?"
"It's Blake." He said nodding toward the other side of the room. Frank glanced around the bed.
"Oh my God! What the hell happened here?" When Frank shouted, Coop felt Ashlee's whole body tense up. She had calmed down a bit while they had waited for Frank to arrive. Coop had held her and talked to her, although he had no idea what he actually said. The only reason he was holding himself together was because he knew Ashlee needed him.
Two paramedics rushed in the room, before Coop could answer. They rushed in and immediately started trying to revive Blake. Ashlee had her face buried in his shirt trying to shut out what was going on. Police and paramedics continued to file in to the room. One paramedic asked if they were injured and Coop answered for them both.
"No, we're okay."
"But the blood..." The paramedic gestured to Ashlee's arm.
"It's not hers." Coop felt Ashlee flinch in his arms.
"Coop, you and Ashlee come out in to the hall. You don't need to be in here and I want to know exactly what happened."
As soon as they were in the hall Frank turned on him. "Coop, what the hell is going on?"
"I shot her." Ashlee blurted out before he could say anything.
His brothers eyes widened for a moment. "You did what?"
"No, Frank, it's not what it sounds like. Blake was threatening her." Coop jumped in wrapping an arm around Ashlee as if to shield her from Frank.
"If Blake was threatening you, Ashlee, why is it she is the one lying in there dead?" Frank's voice wasn't quite a shout but it was close enough.
"I... it all happened so fast... I just..." Ashlee was struggling for words.
"Coop, were you here when this happened? Did you see Blake threaten her?"
"No... no, I got here after..." Coop said letting out a sigh.
"Okay, Ashlee, I'm sorry I'm going to have to take you in for questioning." Frank took her arm to lead her down the hallway.
Coop grabbed his shoulder. "Frank, you can't be serious. Ashlee was protecting herself. You can't believe she meant to shoot Blake." He couldn't even believe this was happening. All he knew was that Ashlee was scared and he didn't know how to protect her.
"Look, it wouldn't be the first time she shot someone. I'm sorry, Coop." Frank turned and led Ashlee down the hallway. Coop grabbed his car keys, if Ashlee was going to the station so was he.

Date: 2008-07-17 10:25 pm (UTC)You really know how to write dialogue for these charaters, Jenny. I could actually hear Frank doing his shouting/condemnation thing.
Nicely done!

I really appreciate all the support, Emm! It makes the writing so much easier. *hugs*
BTW: Did you have any luck with that photo program?
