A Shot In the Dark - Part 7

This chapter is short, sorry. For the record I know nothing about police procedures, but in fairness neither do the writers of GL, so humor me.
Ashlee sat in the jail cell and tried desperately to hold herself together. She was terrified. She had gone through this before and it was always scary, but the other times she had known she was doing the right thing. This time, all she knew was that it wasn't her fault and she hadn't intended for Blake to die. Not only was she afraid of what might happen to her, but she was also afraid of losing Coop. They had just gotten back together and she just didn't know if she could take losing him a second time.
There was some comfort knowing that Coop knew what happened, what really happened. She knew he was going to do whatever he could to help get her out of this situation. But, what if he couldn't find a way to help her?
****************************
The first thing Coop did after Frank took Ashlee away was call Doris. Normally he didn't like having to call Ashlee's mom... he didn't really like much about Ashlee's mom at all, but she was the mayor. If anyone would be able to help Ashlee it would be Doris. After telling her that Ashlee had been arrested, he had to listen to ten minutes of her ranting about how she was going to make sure Frank was fired AGAIN and this time she'd make sure it stuck.
"Doris! Right now we need to get Ashlee..."
"What exactly is she being charged with, Henry?" Doris didn't have a problem interrupting people. Coop sighed and rubbed his forehead. At this moment he just wanted to get Ashlee and take her home.
"Frank wouldn't tell me anything, but Blake was shot, so..." Again Doris interrupted him.
"Oh my God, Ashlee SHOT someone else?"
"No, Blake was trying to shoot her, she was defending herself." Coop couldn't help raising his voice a bit. He just wanted Doris to help Ashlee. A normal parent would do whatever they could to help their child. Doris was anything but normal.
"If she was defending herself, why has she been arrested? Is this your brothers way of getting back at me for..."
This time Coop interrupted her, "Since Blake was shot and not Ashlee, I guess they think it doesn't look like self-defense... look, I really don't know why this is happening, Doris. All I know is that I don't want Ashlee having to stay here."
"Did they set bail?"
"No, Frank said she'd have to wait until the morning since they..."
"I'll call in a favor. I should be able to get a judge to set bail tonight. I'm on my way." Before Coop could say anything else, Doris had hung up. As frustrated as he felt, he still breathed a sigh of relief knowing that Doris was going to try and get Ashlee out.
Doris arrived forty minutes later, looking exactly like a politician should look. Not a hair out of place, despite the fact that her daughter was in jail. "Frank, I don't know what you were thinking arresting my daughter, when this was clearly self-defense..." Doris started in on Frank as soon as she walked in, not even sparing Coop a glance.
"Doris, I had to. She shot someone." Coop felt anger over Frank's words. There had been times he'd wanted to punch his brother, but never more than at that moment. As the two continued to bicker Coop took a seat in one of the office chairs that nobody was using. He put his face in his hands and sighed with exhaustion. He wondered how Ashlee was doing.
*************************************
Ashlee had been shocked to learn they were going to set bail tonight. After all it was nearly ten in the evening. Once she got to the hearing and saw her mother sitting there she knew what had happened. Obviously her mother had pulled some strings. People didn't say no to the mayor, especially not Mayor Wolfe.
The whole proceeding hadn't taken long at all, she didn't get a chance to say much of anything because the attorney her mother hired for her did all the talking. Unfortunately, her bail was high... really high. Her lawyer explained that it was due to her prior record. Ashlee had nodded in response. All these things were happening around her and she was still trying to process what had happened in Coop's room.
Once she got back to the SFPD jail cell, she was so tired, she didn't even know if she could worry about this anymore. She was emotionally and physically exhausted. Doris had told her that she didn't have the money to post bail right then, but that she'd try to find a way. As Ashlee laid down on the grimy cot in the cell she felt tears slide down her face. What was going to happen to her now?
Just when her eyes were starting to drift closed in an exhausted sleep the door to the cell opened and officer walked in. "Ms. Wolfe, you need to come with me."
