A Shot In the Dark - Part 13

Coop was exhausted, not to mention frustrated. It had been five days since Ashlee was shot and Frank still hadn't found Johnny. Coop kept telling Ashlee that everything was okay because he didn't want her to worry, but he was starting to wonder if everything would be okay. The only bright spot was that Ashlee was recovering nicely, physically anyway. She was still having nightmares every night and Coop was at a loss as to how to help her get rid of them. He had slept at the hospital every night while she was there and was really glad to have her back at the boarding house.
He glanced over at her. She was reclining on the bed and editing his writing. Coop couldn't help his grin when he saw her forehead wrinkle in thought right before she drew a big X through one of his paragraphs. He couldn't let anything else happen to her and he certainly couldn't let her go to jail.
He stood up rather abruptly and walked over to the bed. Ashlee smiled up at him. "Ash, I've got to go out for a bit. Are you going to be okay here by yourself?"
"Yeah, I'll be fine. I've got lots of work to do here." She gestured to his story with an impish smile. Coop tried to look offended but failed miserably when he saw the sparkle in her eyes. He kissed her, pulling away reluctantly and headed for the door. "Coop?" Ashlee called as his hand touched the door knob. "Where are you going?"
"Dad's got an appointment, so I told him I'd watch Company for him." The lie rolled off his tongue easily because he'd been rehearsing it in his head.
"Oh, tell him I say hi." She said turning back to her reading. Coop felt a twinge of guilt that she had believed him so easily.

Coop kept his arrival at the police station pretty low-profile. He didn't want Frank or Marina to know he was there. Neither one of them would let him see Joe, and that was the whole purpose of this visit. He was lucky that there was a lot going on at the station because he basically went unnoticed. He headed back to the holding cell where they had been keeping Joe. Frank was still trying to get information out of him, but he wasn't talking.
"You come here to hit me again?" Joe asked rather beligerantly when he saw Coop.
"I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to." Coop responded honestly. "You shot my girlfriend." His tone was calm, the whole way to the police station he'd told himself he needed to keep a level head around this guy.
"Look, kid, I thought she was a cop... I wouldn't never shoot a woman for no reason..." Joe's poor English skills made the teacher inside of Coop cringe a little.
"Well, she isn't a cop and you did shoot her for no reason." Coop took a breath attempting to remember his mantra to stay calm. "Look, I need to know how to find Johnny."
"You ain't gonna find Johnny if he don't wanna be found."
"Joe, do you realize that my girlfriend that you shot is also the mayor's daughter?" Coop watched as Joe's bushy eyebrows shot up in surprise. "If you tell me how to find Johnny, things may go better for you." He let his words sink in to Joe's head.
"How do I know you're telling me the truth?" Coop wasn't really surprised that Joe was skeptical.
"Hey, you don't have to believe me, but you should probably know that the mayor doesn't take kindly to people that shoot her only child." Coop turned to walk away.
"Wait, kid, I'll tell you how to find Johnny." Joe called out. Coop allowed himself a smile before turning back to Joe. "If I do, you'll talk to the mayor for me?" Coop nodded. "Fine... Johnny mostly stays at that abandoned warehouse on the outside of town. He works from there and I think he sleeps there too. Listen, kid, I don't care what Cooper offers him, he ain't gonna talk to no DA."
"I guess we'll see." Coop responded before walking away. Now he just had to somehow convince a wanted criminal to talk with the DA and tell him that Blake had bought the gun. That would prove that Blake brought the gun in the room with her.

Coop arrived at the abandoned warehouse feeling a bit unsettled. The building was intimidating. Graffiti plastered the walls, there was trash littering the ground and nearly all the windows were broken out. Coop thought of Ashlee, knew he had to do this and entered the warehouse.
"Johnny!" He called out. He wasn't sure if he actually wanted an answer or not. Coop stepped a little further in to the dank, dark warehouse. Broken machinery was laying everywhere. There were lots of places a person could hide. Before he could call out again he felt cold hard metal against the back of his head. Coop froze.
"Who are you?" Came a raspy voice from behind him.

I love the level of commitment from Coop to proving Ashlee's innocence...he's willing to do anything and that's why we love him! Can't wait to see how Coop talks Johnny into testifying. *grin*
Is the next chapter done yet? *drums fingers on desk* *laughing*
