Sleep to Dream - Part 19

So, this is the last chapter of this story, but there will be an epilogue, hopefully I'll get that posted tomorrow. I hope you've enjoyed the story.

Coop had never imagined that he would be the one telling Ashlee that she was pregnant. He had thought about them having a family, of course, but usually the dad isn't the first one to know. For that reason, he was not at all surprised by the confused look on her face.

 

“Um... Coop... I think maybe you should get the nurse...” She said touching her fingers to her forehead. Coop was about to hop up and find someone for her, but her next sentence stopped him. “Obviously the medicine they gave me is having a bad reaction, because I thought you just said we are having a baby...”

 

Coop couldn't help the grin that spread across his face. “Ash, we are having a baby.” He took her hands in his. She gave him a look that said she thought he was crazy.

 

“Coop, if we were having a baby that would mean that I would have to be...”

 

“Pregnant.” Coop finished for her matter-o-factly. Ashlee studied his face for what seemed like an eternity, as if to discern if he was serious or just messing with her. Whatever she saw in his eyes made her own widen in shock.

 

“Oh my.... God! B...bu...but we were only together...”

 

“Once.” Coop finished softly, giving her hands a squeeze. Ashlee pulled her hands away from his covering her stomach with both hands.

 

“Are... are you sure?” She looked at him again. Coop nodded. “How...?”

 

Coop chuckled softly. “If you don't remember how, then I should probably be insulted...” Ashlee rolled her eyes at him and smacked his arm playfully.

 

“I swear I had no idea or I would have told you.” She said softly, staring at her stomach again. “What are we going to do? I mean.... I always hoped one day that we might.... but that was in the future and this is happening right now...” Ashlee was definitely starting to panic.

 

He took her face in his hands, pressing a soft kiss to her lips. Her muscles relaxed instantly at his touch. “We are going to be fine.” He said when he pulled away, his eyes never leaving hers. “I know that this is a shock, believe me I was shocked too, but, Ashlee, the thought of our baby... I'm just... so happy.” Ashlee's eyes got teary and she pulled his face down for another kiss.

 

“I've always wanted to have a family with you, Coop. I used to have daydreams about it... and now it's happening and that's amazing, but this is scary. What if we don't know what to do, what if we screw the kid up... Oh my God, what if I'm like my mother?” She added in horror, as if the idea had just hit her.

 

“Ashlee, stop. You are nothing like your mother, how many times do I have to tell you that? Listen, we'll figure out what to do... it's not like we're the first people to ever have a baby.” Ashlee looked as if she was about to protest, but he kissed her again before she could. “If it gets really scary, we'll just get my dad and Frank to help out.” He added. Ashlee grinned at that remark.

 

Ashlee grabbed his hand and intertwined their fingers. “So... we're really going to do this?”

 

Coop placed his free hand on her stomach, he tried to imagine what it would feel like when he saw his son or daughter. “I don't think we have a choice.” He gave her a smile.

 

The doctor walked in the room at that moment. She glanced at Coop's hand on Ashlee's stomach and smiled. “I take it you told Ashlee that she's going to be a mom.” Coop nodded, glancing down at Ashlee. “Great, well I did want to let you know that we've run some more tests and it appears that the baby is doing just fine. But, we will continue to monitor your pregnancy closely. Unfortunately you are going to need to be on bed rest, at least for now. We'll be monitoring your dizzy spells closely as well. Do you have any questions for me?” Coop and Ashlee looked at each other then looked back at the doctor. “I can see you are a bit overwhelmed, so if you think of anything have the nurse page me.”

 

When she turned to leave, Coop called out to her. “Wait, when can Ashlee go home?”

 

“We want her to stay overnight, but I expect her to be released in the morning.” She said over her shoulder. “Oh, and congratulations, you two.”

 

When the door closed behind the doctor, Ashlee turned to Coop. “So, we're going to be parents.” Coop laid down on the tiny hospital bed as best he could and put his arms around her.

 

“I hope you know how much I love you.” He mumbled in to her hair.

 

“I do know.” She replied softly. “But... don't ever stop telling me.” She added glancing up with a twinkle in her eye. Coop grinned at her. Her eyes got serious, “will you stay with me?” Coop knew she was asking about that night. She hated hospitals, especially when she was there by herself.

 

“Always.” He answered. Regardless of what she had meant when she asked, he meant forever.

I have considered the idea of doing a series of one-shot stories following Ashlee's pregnancy. Chronologically they would fall between this chapter and tomorrows epilogue. I'd love opinions on whether that would be something you all would be interested in reading.

Aww, I'm sorry to see another one of your wonderful stories come to a close. I can't wait for the epilogue and the possible one shots. Thank you for a beautiful story. I've loved each chapter. I only have one complaint...poor Doris needs an apology. *wink*

I think you wrote Ashlee's reaction perfectly. Even though she loves Coop, I have a feeling she would be very freaked out. Coop is so loving with her. *sigh* Thank you again for this story. ***hugs***

I do feel kind of bad for Doris. *laughing* Maybe I'll fit an apology in to one of the one-shots. I'm glad you thought Ashlee's reaction was okay. Coop is definitely the calm one in this situation.

I hate to see your story end, but as always you did an amazing job with this chapter. I would love to read one-shots following the pregnancy. That would be awesome. Definitely want to read Coop's reaction when he gets to hold his son/daughter for the first time. *hug* laceytree
