Coop let out a sigh and gazed in to an identical pair of eyes. They were exactly like his, only they were still all wide-eyed innocence.
“Come on, Cooper, just say it one time.... da-da.” He looked hopefully in to his little boys eyes. They blinked back at him, but he said nothing. The little boys face was serious as if he was giving it some thought, but still he said nothing. He was the picture of Ashlee, with his blond hair and dimples, but he had Coop's eyes and unfortunately, his stubborn streak. “Say da-da.” He said slowly drawing it out.
“No.” Cooper replied. Coop looked heaven-ward. He suspected his son could say it but that he was choosing not to. Naturally he had no trouble saying no. The little boy was sitting on his lap, looking quite pleased with himself.
“Please, Cooper, just say it one time for me... da-da.”
Cooper studied his face for a moment then gave his dad a hopeful grin. “Cookie?” Coop dropped his head on to the back of the couch with a sigh.
“Okay, listen, I'll make you a deal. I'll give you a cookie if you say da-da?”
“Are you trying to bribe our son?” Ashlee asked from the doorway. Coop glanced up at her and noticed the grin on her face. She was standing there with a mischievous smile in her eyes holding Jenna, Cooper's twin sister. The little girl was watching her brother and dad with interest.
At Ashlee's voice, Cooper's head spun to the doorway. “Ma ma!” He cried. Coop let out a groan of frustration. Ashlee's bubbly laughter filled the living room of their house. She walked over and sat down next to him with Jenna on her lap. The little girls blond hair was up in little pigtails. As soon as they sat down, Jenna's arms reached out for Coop. She was definitely daddy's girl. Coop smiled as they traded children.
“He'll say it eventually, Coop.” Ashlee said, tickling her little boy. He let out a loud giggle.
“I know. But, he has no trouble saying ma ma and cookie...”
“Cookie!” Jenna and Cooper yelled together. Ashlee started laughing again. Coop had to admit being a father was the most amazing thing that had ever happened to him and true to his words Ashlee was an amazing mother, but sometimes he still felt a little overwhelmed by his twins. They inspired both awe and fear in him at different times.
“No cookies, right now, munchkins. It's nap time.” Ashlee stood up with Cooper, and Coop followed suit, placing a kiss on Jenna's forehead. She had his eyes too, but she was definitely the more easy-going of the twins. She had been saying da-da for weeks, but Cooper still stubbornly refused.
They put the kids down for their naps and slipped from the room. Ashlee shut the door quietly behind her. She turned to him, wrapping her arms around his neck and placing a hungry kiss on lips.
When she pulled away, Coop smiled at her flushed face. “What was that for, Mrs. Bradshaw?”
Her eyes always lit up at the use of her married name. “Just for being you.” She said with a grin. She placed another quick kiss on his lips then took his hand pulling him down the hallway. She glanced back over her shoulder, with a naughty smile. “And because we have at least thirty minutes until the kids wake up.” She gave him an exaggerated wink and took off for the bedroom. Coop laughed and chased after her. Life was perfect.
